There are no bridges across the canyon and those desiring to get from north to the south will have to make more than 300 kilometers trip (although the direct distance is 19 kilometers).
Deep down in canyon flows Colorado river. From 1,5 km height it looks small, but actually it’s very rapid and powerful river. Esplanada – red sandstone terrace looks especially impressive during the sunset. Now this place is very popular among tourists. Some courageous people dare to make pedestrian trips along the canyon, but the most of the tourists prefer buses.
Flagstaff is a cultural oasis in Arizona deserts. Very picturesque place, once having been the railway station, look much more different than usual American small towns with a couple of motels and bars along highways. Ancient hotels neighbor here with the vegetarian cafes and the most popular music here is jazz. Lowell observatory is famous for the fact that the planet Pluto was discovered here in 1930. While it may snow through the winter, Lake Tahoe’s temperatures are optimal during the month of June, staying in the 70s. The beautiful green, forest covered land has many activities to offer including hiking, boating, swimming and, of course, fishing on the gorgeous lake that is home to many different varieties of Trout.

However, if you prefer the city, Los Angeles is one of the best. Placed on the Pacific Coastline, L.A. is a magnificent city to visit. It is surrounded by numerous surf-influenced beach towns, including Long Beach, Huntington Beach and Newport Beach. If you don’t mind a two-hour drive, Big Bear Mountain is a great spot to enjoy many recreational activities. California has it all. Its one of the only states where you can visit the warm, sandy beaches and snow covered mountain tops in the same day.

Though there are many more beautiful places in the western region of our country, the east has a lot to offer as well. Florida’s panhandle, known as the Emerald Coast for its emerald green waters, doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. We all know South Florida is a great site to see, being home to the Florida Keys and Everglades, but not too many speak of the northwestern region of the state. This could be what is keeping it from becoming over populated like the south, if that’s the case; maybe less recognition is a good thing. Navarre beach says it best, “Florida’s best kept secret.” The Florida panhandle is home to sandy, white beaches unlike any others in the states. The combination of the brilliant emerald green ocean and snow white, soft sand makes this spot a choice place for vacationing.

What it left behind is a 550 foot deep crater.  Its rim is raised 150 above the desert floor and it has a circumference of 2.4 miles.  The rim offers several fantastic overlooks with telegraphic lenses so you can see the crater-pocked bottom.  Guided tours along the rim allow you to get a closer look.

 

Explore the Solar System

 

The crater is breathtaking, but the visitor center offers even more.  The Meteor Crater visitor center is full of exhibits, simulations, artifacts and interactive displays.  The center’s wide screen theater offers its film “Impacts and Collisions,” which simulates the meteorite crashing.

 

The Meteor Crater was used by Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and other astronauts to train for the first moon walk.  They used lunar tools to collect soil and rocks from the crater’s floor because of its resemblance to the moon’s surface.  The visitor center offers all kinds of exhibits pertaining to the space program, including its Astronaut Wall of Fame and an actual test capsule from the Apollo Mission.

 

Stay and Stargaze

 

Meteor Crater also has its own RV campground which gets rave reviews from travel sites.  It’s modern and clean, and has all the amenities you’ll need like wireless internet access, electrical hook-ups and clean showers.  It also has its own gas station, convenience store, rec room, laundry facilities and Mexican restaurant.

 

The RV campground is a great launching point for other Route 66 and southwestern attractions.  The fee includes a discount for Meteor Crater itself, and also offers coupons for other sightseeing places including Petrified Forest, Grand Canyon, Sunset Crater, Wupatki National Monument and lots more.

 

It’s also a great stay because of its natural beauty.  Meteor Crater is located in the high desert country, which has moderate days and cool nights.  The park is surrounded by trees and shrubbery.  The stars at night light up the sky, and the desert sunrise and sunset are light shows of shifting colors.

 

One of the great things about this Route 66 attraction is that it’s not a tourist trap.  Meteor Crater is a small, friendly, family-run operation.  Even though it’s huge, with its full scale visitor center and full-service RV park, the staff are so friendly that you can feel right at home.  The tour guides are fun and knowledgeable, and guaranteed to make your walking tour more than just a tromp along the rim.  Meteor Crater is an excellent Route 66 attraction that shouldn’t be missed.

Experience The Apollo Space Mission At Arizona’s Meteor Crater

Did you know that the Apollo space mission astronauts took their first moon steps right here in northern Arizona?  Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and other astronauts trained for the moon landing at Arizona’s Meteor Crater, located between Winslow and Flagstaff on I-40. 

 

At Meteor Crater, you can not only see the massive impact crater itself, but learn all about the space program at the park’s interactive visitor center.  It boasts the most extensive collection of exhibits and artifacts related to the solar system.  There is a lot to learn and a lot to see at this world-class space exploration attraction.

 

Training for the Apollo Space Mission

 

In January 1963, a group of astronauts were taken to Flagstaff, Arizona.  From there, they visited a number of sites in the area where it was believed that the terrain resembled that of the moon.  These sites include Sunset Crater, parts of the Grand Canyon, and the Barringer Meteorite Crater, known also as Meteor Crater.

 

The Barringer crater was chosen for the most extensive training because of its resemblance to the moon’s surface with its many craters of different sizes.  In the hot desert sun, astronauts put on their heavy space suits and practiced collecting soil and rock samples from the canyon floor using specialized lunar tools.  Astronauts continued to train here until the mid-1970’s.

 

Experience Outer Space at the Visitors Center

 

At Meteor Crater’s visitor center, you’ll find the Interactive Discovery Center, which includes 24 unique exhibits including two interactive computer displays that show the outer limits of the known universe using high-tech graphics.  Displays cover asteroids, planets, the solar system, meteorites, the Diablo Canyon meteorite that impacted the Barringer crater and the Shoemaker-Levy 9 comet that hit Jupiter. 

 

The center also has information about “near earth objects.”  These are things sailing through space at incredible speeds that scientists believe could cause earthlings worry.  Scientists are studying these objects and their trajectories in order to prepare for future collisions. 

 

There’s an actual Apollo test capsule in the courtyard of the center, so you can see just how cramped the astronauts’ quarters were.  It’s hard to believe that they could’ve traveled to the moon in something that small.  You’ll also find the Astronaut Wall of Fame, which walks you through the history of the space program.

 

And don’t forget the meteorite.  Ever touched something from outer space?  At Meteor Crater, you can.  A chunk of the original meteorite is on display in the park’s visitor center.  You can touch it, but don’t try to lift it – it’s made up mostly of nickel and weighs about 1,400 pounds.

 

The gift shop also has astronaut ice cream, patches, toys, games and science kits.  It’s an excellent one-stop shop for kids who love science and outer space.  In addition to meteor and space related goods, they also have a huge variety of things related to the American southwest, Route 66, Native American cultures and Arizona history. 

 

The Biggest Hole in the Earth You’ll Ever See

 

While you’re there, be sure to see the crater!  It’s a giant hole in the earth 575 feet deep and 2.4 miles around.  You can hike the rim, which stands 150 feet above the desert floor, and look down into the crater at one of its overlooks.  There is also a viewing area inside the air conditioned visitor center if it gets too hot for you.  Spyglasses allow you to see the ground where the astronauts walked, and there’s even a cardboard cut-out astronaut to give you an idea of how massive the scale is.

 

Meteor Crater has the nation’s best space exploration information center.  It’s an excellent experience for science lovers of any age.
